Journal 3: What Can Scary Movies Do For Your Body?

"You can lose weight by watching horror movies, according to scientists researching how to appear in Halloween trend stories"
Written by: Sean O'Neal

According to this article science finally decided to be cool for once by declaring that watching horror films is a relatively effective way to lose weight, especially if you're going to ignore all other science and just sit there. At the University of Westminster researchers recently announced the conclusions of their very methodical Halloween trend piece. They revealed that watching 90 minutes of scary things can help you burn more than  100 calories, which is nearly the same amount you would with a half-hour walk. The logic behind losing weight from scary movies is that horror films cause an increase in heart rates and a burst of appetite-reducing, metabolic rate-boosting adrenaline, enabling a person to burn off more calories they are not completely jaded and desensitized.

I picked this article because as soon as I read the title I was interested to see what it was about, because I did not believe it. After reading the article though I now see the relation on how scary movies can help you lose weight. For example when I watch scary movies my heart rate always increases, and a majority of the time I also lose my appetite. These two things are proved ways that people loose weight. Now every time I watch a scary movie and am getting really freaked out I can think to myself on the good side I am burning calories! http://www.avclub.com/articles/you-can-lose-weight-by-watching-horror-movies-acco,88124/

Brief Screening Report

Lights, Camera, Action.. Those are the words that you would hear if you were behind the scenes in making a movie. Within the first ten minutes of the movie Lost In Translation directed by Sofia Coppola I knew there was going to be amazing artistic choices throughout the movie. I was exactly right on that prediction. There were so many scenes with amazing colors, lighting, camera angles, and just in general backgrounds. After some long thought out decisions I decided that the most important scene happens within the first five minutes of the movie. This first five minute scene is absolutely breath taking and makes you feel like you are right there in the scene in person. I think that scene is key to the movie because it helps us to understand where the movie is taking place and being filmed. Within this scene you able to see all the amazing street and building lights on the streets of Tokyo, in a night time view. This is not only an extraordinary view, but it also allows us to know where the movie we are about to watch is taking place. I think the key part to all the beautiful lights is the camera angle used to shoot all the lighting on the streets of Tokyo. I believe that the camera angle was absolutely perfect because you could see all the colors that stood out on every sign and you could also see the full names of the businesses that were in the scene and even some that were a little bit further away. The picture below is not the exact scene from the movie but it is pretty close to the original scene. What do you think of this image?

Journal 2: Romance+Basketball= Love and Basketball!!

Ever since the day I could walk I have had a love for the sport of basketball. Shortly after I turned two I got my first basketball and my dad started teaching me how to dribble and shoot a basketball. When I was in kindergarten I could finally sign up to be on a basketball team, so my parents signed me up since I had a strong interest in the sport of basketball.  At a basketball bonding party in sixth grade one of my teammates brought over the movie Love and Basketball directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Love and Basketball became my favorite movie after I had watched it a bonding party and still is my favorite movie to this day.

The movie Love and Basketball takes place in L.A. where Monica moves in next door to Quincy. At the time they are both 11, and want to play in the NBA, just like Quincy's dad. Monica and Quincy have a love-hate relationship lasts into high school. As high school ends, they come together as a couple, but within a year, with both of them playing ball at USC, Quincy's relationship with his father takes an ugly turn, and it leads to a break up with Monica.

I believe that this is a very good movie, because there is a nice laid out story line and the actors do a very nice job of fulfilling the characters. For example, Sanna Lathan does a wonderful job or being Monica and Omar Epps hits the spot of being Quincy. As far as the story line goes I think this movie emphasizes something important that not many people do. That is to “Follow your dreams.”  Another thing that makes this movie my favorite movie is that there is a lot of information you can learn about the game of basketball, because there is a ton of scenes where they are actually playing basketball.

Journal 1: Response to Winning actually isn’t the only thing

The article "Winning actually isn't the only thing" written by David Maraniss is about the Monday night football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. In this article Maraniss bring us Packers legendary coach Vince Lombardi, who didn't believe that winning was the only thing that mattered. Maraniss didn't agree with the football call Monday night at the end of the game he know that nothing can be done about it, since the game is done and over with. He did however, mention how he was so upset and it took him hours to calm down. In the end Maraniss thought about Russell Wilson (Seahawks Quarterback  and Pete Carroll (Seahawks Head coach), and how they reacted after the game especially what they said during their interviews. When the call was made Carroll was running and jumping around in excitement, but in his interview he said it was a "tough call." Maraniss leaves us with saying that they shouldn't act like they won and be all happy and excited about the call and that he would rather have a bad call called on his team and deal with it, then have the call be in your favor.

I agree with his position that winning is not everything 100%. As being a two sport high school athlete and going for a coaching minor it is important to realize that winning is not everything. Throughout my elementary, middle school, and high school sports my coaches have always stressed that winning is not everything, if we go out and give 110% effort that is all they care about. I also agree with David Maraniss saying that Carroll and Wilson and the Seahawks don’t have to pretend that the call was right and that they deserved the win. Even Seahawks fans say that was the WORST call in NFL history so, even though the score at the end of the game was in favor of the Seahawks, I along with just about everyone else in the world do not think that the win was earned in anyway.

Believing Game Part 2

Random Drug Testing in High Schools
I believe that random drug testing should not be allowed in high schools, because the test is not always reliable. The tests are not always reliable because there are many different ways people can tamper the results. I also believe since the tests are not reliable isn’t it a waste of money to test people in the first place, because you never know if they tampered the results and you also have to pay to get the test and send it in to get read. Finally I believe that random drug testing is also an invasion of privacy. I believe this because you have to tell the person testing you a lot of your personal information and it is super awkward handing them your own personal urine sample while they write down some information about it.

Believing Game Part 1

Random Drug Testing in High School
I believe that every high school should adopt a random drug testing program, because it can send a strong message out to our student body. In a school if the “popular” students don’t do drugs and or alcohol, the students who look up to them will most likely also choose not to do drugs and alcohol. Adopting a random drug testing program will allow schools to see a major drop in drug and alcohol related issues throughout the school. Studies show that schools with a random drug testing program have had less people caught with drugs and or alcohol in their cars or in their lockers. Finally, I believe if you don’t do drugs or drink, you have nothing to worry about if you get drug tested so why not get tested and be proud to say that you are drug and alcohol free.
